UPDATED: The location for the in-person public hearing has been changed to Chapel Hill, and the deadline to submit public comments has been extended to Jan. 23.
In support of the University’s Climate Action Plan, Carolina is working to transition away from coal while increasing the use of renewable fuels. The University has applied to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Air Quality (DAQ) for modification of its current Title V air quality permit to allow for testing of an engineered pelletized fuel in the Cameron Avenue Cogeneration Facility.
The University’s application was reviewed by the DAQ to determine compliance with the requirements of the North Carolina Environment Management Commission air pollution regulations. The results of that review led to the preliminary determination that the project could be approved, and the DAQ permit could be issued, if certain permit conditions are met.
The DAQ is holding an in-person public hearing to receive comments on the draft air quality permit. The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) on Jan. 16 at the Chapel Hill Town Hall at 405 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. in Chapel Hill.
Comments on the project will be accepted by the DAQ through Jan. 23. Comments can be submitted by email to daq.publiccomments@deq.nc.gov with the subject line “UNC.24A” or by voicemail at 919-707-8448.
Additional information about the permit application and the public hearing is available on the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality website.
